You are right, Don :) No matter what some moments or villains will always remind me my favourite plots.

Oh, how could I forget about Vargas? He was fine villain

Love the animated commentary.

Perhaps a listing of villains to choose from to help this thread.  Outside of the lists already given, I can't really think of villains off the top of my head.  All I would be doing is rehashing someones list.

This list isn't easy for some.   ;)

Major ones or... All? That could get a bit excessive. So many people dislike the X-Men. Hell, I dislike the X-Men right now.

I would say major ones, really only the ones of note beyond the lists already submited.  The problem with villains, they are not very impactful, which means Marvel really needs to do a better job with their villains.

Thanks for adding a list.  I actually plan on looking at the list and choose.

Wow - first up amazing listing  - and those that thought of other ones that aren't on the list is great too.

My list.
10. The Phalanx/The Brood - to me they are tied because they basically do the same thing as far villains go. They're the borg of the MU.  Assimulate others.

9. The Neo - too new but had loads of potential.  Mostly because of wanting to survive and protect themselves.  The were a quiet villain with their own beliefs.

8. Bastion - he's complex and has agendas with agendas.

7. Apocalypse - his background with his lapses in time makes him hard to put any lower on the list but what he can do when he's awake is formidable.  Sort of like Godzilla.  He does his bad stuff then takes a nap.  (Only Godzilla is cooler, imo).

6.  Shadow King - he mind controls people and while not my favorite thing to happen to a character, if done right can be compelling.

5. Vargus - the whole rich, money aspect and being so self serving - puts him in a level of villain that is compelling to me.  Its more than being bad, its being rich and bad.

4. Dark Phoenix - problem with this villain is they really aren't that much different from the Phalanx and Brood - but ... the real difference is power and loads of it.  How it corrupts the person in possession is probably the most interesting thing about it.

3. Onslaught - because no one expected Onslaught - origins and all.  And the character was so unexpected that is one of the appealing things about the character.  He is unexpected.

2. Magneto - not much to say about him.  The fact he believes what he does and doesn't back down says it all.

1. Sinister - his scientific agenda for whatever reason, makes him more vile because he lacks the care or ethics outside of his own.  It's not that he's obsessed with power or anything more than that, but its really imo - just for his own curiosity enjoys the benefits that come with it.

Okay - for those who don't want to make a list, pick a villain and discuss the villain or discuss other thoughts here in the villain arena.  ;D

I would have thought Apocalypse would have garnered a higher spot on your list. I mean he's touched so many X-Men during his comic tenure. Wolverine, Angel, Polaris, Gambit, Sunfire, Cable, Cyclops, Jean, Iceman and even villains like Mystique, Exodus and basically created your number 1, Mr. Sinister... He conquered an entire alternate Earth, and is the cause of several large story arcs even after his death... How did he die again?

While yes, he had touched allot of Xmen.  Only merged with one though, but made horseman of the others.  And while he did create Sinister - who is clever if not a bit too scientific.  When written well (Gillen), he is more than just mad scientist.  Poccy isn't all that impressive as a villain.   He's got power and tech.

Apocalypse does his thing, fails, then disappears.  Wash, rinse, repeat. While formidable when awake and taking on Xmen or making them horsemen, the end result is the same.  He fails, he goes to sleep.   His goals aren't even that unique.  Wants to rule the world.  Thats it.  Maybe there is more depth to him but I've never seen it.

He reminds of Godzilla without taking over he world and having horsemen. Godzilla's main thing is to cause havoc.  He wakes up from his watery nap, walks to whichever continent (usually Asia, every where in new film), and destroys stuff.

If he's a good guy, the excuse is he's helping save the world he lives in, and when he's done he goes right back to the ocean for his nap.

If he's a bad guy, somebody woke him up and he's grumpy (usually the metaphor for how we should not test nuclear weapons, etc).  He walks around destroying stuff and then is defeated (not killed), and is dumped back into the ocean where he can continue his nap.  (Once he was tossed into space).

A long way to say one trick pony.

I suppose the effects Apocalypse has caused the Xmen should bring him further down on my list.  Even so, the Xmen don't talk about it, a passing line maybe.  There is no real aftermath or consequences.  It's wrapped up and put aside.

The only character they really tried to do something with and it boring was Cyclops when he merged with him.  The idea was interesting though, merging and seeing how a character deals with it.

I dunno how he died, and I suppose he'll come back.  I think the fact they're trying to do something with the character via Evan is good on Marvel's part.

Thats why he is where he is on my list.  Looking over my list - I appear to be partial to the more "thinking" type villain.  Ones with plans with plans with plans.  Exception of DPhoenix - no plans really, other than selfish ones .. still its a plan of sorts. But the power alone is quite impressive.

Here's an idea - have Apocalypse wake up when he knows the Phoenix Force is making a trip to Earth and have him harness it as his own.  Though in theory there is no more Phoenix via Wanda and Hope.  Still, Marvel changes its mind all the time.

Interesting. Seeing Apocalypse is the deathnseed incarnate, having him harness the PF would give him the power of creation and rebirth. He'd be both yin and yang. He'd be both sides of the same coin at the same time, death, destruction, life, rebrith, end, beginning, Tupac, Vanilla Ice-

LOL - sorry.  Too funny though.  It would be too much though in power.  Talk about being completely corrupted.

He would change the world and enslave allot of it or do what RR is doing in UA. Make a mutant planet.

About Apocalypse I would add this: with the exception of AoA and his part in Fall of the mutants (mainly because of the things he did to Angel), the rest of the big stories in which he was involved weren't that great, The Twelve was awful and BoA was truly awful.

He was involved in Executioner's Song and the reason for several forefront character's existence, including but not limited to Cable. You can tie him to a lot of characters in the X-Universe. He's kinda of like the X-Men's Kevin Bacon.
