Chapter 2

Metallic rooftops gleamed in the light of the rising suns. The sky was a beautiful palette of reds, pinks, and blues of all hues. It was a sight that could never be forgotten, or paralleled anywhere else in the galaxy.

One man sat alone on one of the glimmering rooftops. And Remy LeBeau was very, very bored. He'd seen this what seemed like a thousand times, and it was indeed unforgettable. Unforgettably boring.

He stood, lithe and agile, and looked around. No-one else awake, he walked to the edge of the roof, and then jumped straight off it.

Lilandra Neramani, majestrix of the Shi'ar empire, was consulting with some of her advisors, while soaking up the beauty of the sunrise. It was very beautiful, but she had seen it more so. Only with Charles Xavier, her love and soulmate, did she truly appreciate the wonder of it - not only the sunrise, but life, also. As the voices of her counsellors came to her, breaking her reverie, did she realise that things were no longer quite so wonderful. As the head of Rearchitecture cleared his throat, and stared pointedly at her, she smiled.

"Please go on, Ga'thran."

"As I was saying ...Chandilar is taking an impossibly long time to repair - the citizens are hardly in the highest of spirits..."

All heads turned to see the figure that had dropped out of the sky, now crouched on the floor. He stood, smiling slightly at Lilandra.

"Bonjour, Lil."

"Good morning, Gambit. Won't you join us? You can be the voice of the Shi'ar citizens."

Ga'thran looked at Remy with distaste. This was *not* a Shi'ar citizen. Red-brown hair - hair, not feathers -, red eyes, and only the faintest of faint star-marking showed he was at least part Shi'ar.

"Empress... I hardly think a mongrel can be the judge of what the Shi'ar citizens want or need."

Lilandra and the other counsellors looked up in disbelief and faint horror. That was hardly the right way to speak to anyone, crossbreed or otherwise.

"Counsellor..."

"No." She turned to see Gambit shake his head solemnly. "He's right. 'Sides which, I ain't been here long enough t' know what de people want." He started to walk off, and Lilandra turned to face Ga'thran, her crest of feathers quivering in anger.

"Do you not know that he was one of the people who laid his life on the line to save you? How dare you speak to him that way!"

Ga'thran looked at her, emotionless except for the look of smug superiority that nestled on his face, the one Lilandra disliked intently. "I speak how I wish..."

"And you can do so while I find a new head of Rearchitecture!" With that, Lilandra left, leaving Ga'thran staring after her coldly.
