Chapter 1

He looked at her. At the way her remembered her. Shining, happy. She was golden. She had been everything, and nothing at once. He held her at a distance for more reasons than one. She was perfect, everything he couldn't be. A hero. A sacrifice.

She had known him. Better than any person had ever or would ever know him. Yet the very reason she knew him so intimately was the same reason he could not get deeper than her surface. He would die for her. He had died for her. He had tried to be her everything, but everything she already had. She needed something more. And even with his power, it was beyond his power to give.

Maybe he could have saved her. Maybe Jean, Ororo, Charles, Logan, Scott, Bobby, Mystique, Kurt or Hank could have saved her. Maybe no one could have.

He had loved her. She had loved him. If even their love could not save her, maybe she was beyond salvation. Too many demons had poisoned her, to many angry voices had pushed her over the ledge.

He looked at her, but not at her. At the way he saw her in his memories.

Her own power could have saved her. She chose not to use it. It could not have been an accident, even though some tried to believe it was. She could not have gotten to the highest spot on the roof without flying, and she could not have slipped. She chose to fall.

It was the wrong way out for a good man. She was honorable and loyal. He had pictured the end many ways, but never like this. He knew her demons had killed her.

She lay there. He couldn't see her, but he could. In his memories.

She was shining. Golden.

It was all he had. He loved her. Would always love her. Broken. Cold.

No.

Shining. Warm. No demons. No voices.

The ultimate dream. To be together again.

Smiling at him. She was warm. Alive.

Shining.

Golden.
