Chapter 5

Skye was standing in front of her full length mirror peering at herself. She was a finished product. She had on her beautiful green dress. Mrs. Thompson had long since done up her diamond choker and the back of her dress. Bethany had come over to do up her hair. She looked like a princess, Em had said. White gloves graced all the way up to her elbows and her matching ring went over top of her glove. I feel like Cinderella! Slippers graced her feet and with her makeup all done by a professional that Bethany had brought along with her, she had never felt as pampered or scared in her life. Remy would be arriving in a couple of minutes to pick her and Emily up. I wonder if he'll t'ink I'm beautiful? Thought Skye.

Mrs. Thompson interrupted her thoughts. "Skye, Remy LeBeau is waiting in de lobby wit' Em."

Skye swung her head towards the door startled and with a blush. Mrs. Thompson smiled, "Y' look beautiful Skye. Dis ball is for y'. Go an' enjoy yourself!" Skye gave her a big hug as she started down the grand staircase towards the foyer.

"It's just like a girl t'be late, eh Em?" asked Remy.

"Yup!" agreed Em holding his hand.

"Mon Dieu." breathed Remy as Skye descended the staircase.

"You said anot'er bad word!" protested Em, but her protests fell deaf ears. He let go of Em's hand as he quickly strode over to the bottom of the staircase.

"Shall we go?" he asked as he extended his arm. Skye smiled as she took his arm.

"Don't y' look pretty Em!" said Skye.

"T'anks!!! Bet'any made it an' I like it too!" she said as she ran out of the house and into the limo that was parked in the driveway.

Remy and Skye followed after her. The chauffeur opened the door and let them in. Making sure Skye's dress wasn't caught in the door, he closed it and drove off towards the LeBeau mansion.

"Look Skye! De party has already started!" said Em pointing at all the cars that were parked along the drive way.

"Remy?" asked Skye uncertainly.

"Mais oui! We wan' t'make an entrance n'est-ce pas?" said Remy with a gleam in his eye. Skye wasn't sure what that gleam meant anymore.

Em ran ahead. "Em!" said Skye. "You're supposed t'find Tante Mattie."

"I know! Have fun!" yelled Em as she ran into the house.

"Y' ready?" asked Remy.

"Non. But let's do dis." she smiled a brave smile. Remy and Skye walked towards the ballroom doors.

"Remy LeBeau and Skye Devreaux." announced the man opening the door, extremely loud. Heads turned up expectantly and an excited whisper began to spread.

Skye looked around as Remy lead her into the room and over towards Jean-Luc.

"Bonjour, Papa." smiled Remy as if he had a secret that no one else knew.

"Skye! Y' are de belle o' de ball." he said with a smile. "Y' are everyt'ing y' grandmere was an' more." He caught himself and moved away to talk to someone else before Remy could question him on his cryptic comment.

"Remy, I'm goin' t'say hi t'people dat I know. Which is not very many people, mais, quand j'ai fini... could y' introduce me t'some o' dese people?" asked Skye softly.

"Sure, just find me. I'll be around." said Remy as he went off in the direction of Lapin and Christoph.

Skye looked around at the crowd and saw people staring at her. It wasn't until she spotted Bella across the room with a bunch of other people, who seemed to be keeping themselves separate, that her uneasiness eased.

Skye went over. "Bella!" she smiled. "I'm glad you came! I don' know many people here. I woulda been all alone!"

Bella smiled back warmly, "I'm glad I did. Where's Remy?"

"Who cares." was Skye's flippant reply, which brought smiles to some of the men around her. "He's off doin' his own t'ing. Do y' know what he made me do?" Her smile turned to a peevish one.

"No, what?" asked a man beside Bella.

"Oh! Je m'excuse! Skye, dis is my cousin Marc. Marc dis is my good friend Skye." she smiled.

He took Skye's hand and slowly kissed her knuckles. "It's not often we find someone as beautiful as y' among t'ieves."

Bella looked at him his daggers in her eyes. "... t'ieves of hearts, dat is. Remy 'as been monopolizing y' attention." he teased. Bella's look softened.

Skye blushed, man were these people sly! "Well, Remy got me up in front o' a large crowd an' made me sing de Star Spangled Banner. It was embarrassing." Bella took Skye's hands and lead her to a seat beside her. The people of Bella's group closed in around them as they talked.

"Do y' live alone?" asked Marc.

"Non, I 'ave my housekeeper and servants t' keep me company." sighed Skye. It did occur to her that she was a little bit lonely. Bella made introductions to everyone around her. After she was finished, Skye wondered how she was supposed to remember them all!

"Would y' like t'dance?" asked Marc.

"I'd love to, but I'd better warn y', I'm not very good." blushed Skye.

"I'm a good teacher." he murmured as he lead her onto the floor for a waltz.

"She be lookin' good Remy." remarked Christoph. "Y' sure y' not falling in love wit' her?"

Lapin sent daggers at Christoph. "I'm sure Christoph." bit out Remy. "I told y' before. I'm only in love wit' Rogue an' she's been missin' f' two years already. Sides, after what Rogue did, she made it clear dat she didn't wan' t' see me again."

Lapin looked at his cousin in new eyes. "Remy, I didn't know dat y' felt like dat. Y' said dat it dere wouldn' be any more girls, period."

"I said dat dere would be no more girls, 'cause I'm still in love wit' Rogue." snapped Remy.

Lapin looked at his cousin curiously. "Y' yourself said dat dis girl looks like her, kinda sounds like her, could it be her?"

"Non!!!" said Remy. Obviously Lapin had hit a sore spot.

"Why not?" asked Christoph. They weren't going to let up on him.

"'Cause, dis girl can touch people. Rogue could never 'cause she absorbed Ms. Marvel. Now leave me alone." raged Remy.

"Don't look now Remy, mais Marc Boudreaux 'as moved in on y' date." grinned Christoph. He was always good at reading people and now, he knew that Remy was in love with this girl, but his love of another kept him

away from all others.

Remy's facial expression changed in an instant to determination. "Let her 'ave a good time. I've already filled out my name for de last song on her song card."

"Oh, really? Which song dey goin' t'be playing?" asked Lapin with a frown on his face.

"I don' know." admitted Remy. "Anyway, I got ta make de rounds." smiled Remy forcing it as he stalked off.

That left Lapin and Christoph alone. "Dat man has de love bug bad." grinned Christoph.

"Y' were right Christoph. How much do I owe y'?" asked Lapin.

"A thousand bucks Lapin." grinned Christoph. "Let's see if we can rig de song... I have de perfect song for dem." Lapin stared at him in puzzlement as Christoph went over to the telephone and began some serious conversation. Speaking about serious conversation, I better tell Jean-Luc dat Candra had just showed up.

Jean-Luc worked the crowd, welcoming everyone. He even had made it over to Bella and the Assassins to welcome them. Encouraging them to dance and eat heartily, he left to greet others.

"Five hours on de feet must make y' thirsty." said Skye coming up behind him with two drinks in hand.

"Oh no Skye. I don' t'ink I could take anymore liquor, but t'anks anyways." said Jean-Luc.

"It's punch... de non spiked stuff." grinned Skye motioning him to take a seat. They both sat down in a private corner at the back beside the orchestra. Jean-Luc took it in appreciation.

"Merci beaucoup. I needed dat." he gulped it down. But, it was already too late, the liquor from before the party started had taken it's toll.

"Skye, dere's somet'ing I need t'tell y'." hiccuped Jean-Luc. Skye looked at him. Obviously he was more than a little bit tipsy. "Y' grandmere an' me were married 'fore her parents found out, den we were forced t'divorce. She was de most wonderful woman in de world. Always had a kind word f' everyone. She loved waterfalls and snowflakes. Painting was a passion. De t'ing y' asked us t'find, is a present I gave her for our first year anniversary. We were married f' a year, two months, an'... six days."

Skye sat in shock. "Why did y' divorce?" she stammered.

"Our families...." was all he said.

"Mon Dieu." whispered Skye. "All dese years... Oncle said dat grandmere did her duty an' kept her heart f' someone else. I didn' know it was y'!"

Jean-Luc's head began to clear and it began to dawn to him what he had just told her. Fear escaped his lips, "Skye, y' can't tell anyone 'bout dis. It's very important. It would mean war between de Guilds. Y' family

is special t' our Guilds..."

"Dere y' are!" said Remy coming up to her smiling. "It's be gettin' late petite an' it be de last dance of de night. It would be my honor if I could dance wit' y'." Remy slowly helped her up and lead her to the dance floor with her still looking back at Jean-Luc, who slowly made his way to the sidelines. All of the people who weren't involved with the Guilds had already gone home. The night had flown by quickly for Skye and now it was the last dance.

"Y' ready?" asked Christoph with a gleam in his eye.

"Ready as I'll ever be. I don't know how you dragged me into doing this..." Brian Adams muttered as he grabbed the microphone behind the curtain. He was to keep himself hidden at all times.

"Because y' owed me homme. Consider dis debt paid." grinned Christoph as he handed out the music and commenced the orchestra.

Look into my eyes... you will see.... what you mean to me.

Search your heart, search your soul and when you find me there you'll search no more.

Don't tell me it's not worth tryin' for. You can't tell me it's not worth dyin' for.

You know it's true, everything I do, I do it for you.

Look into your heart, you will find, there's nothing left to hide.

Take me as I am, take my life. I would give it all I would sacrifice.

Don't tell me it's not worth fighting for. I can't help it, there's nothing I want more.

You know it's true, everything I do, I do it for you.

There's no love, like your love and no other could give more love.

There's nowhere, unless you're there, all the time, all the way, yeah.

Oh, you can't tell me it's not worth tryin' for.

I can't help, it, there's nothing I want more.

Yeah, I would fight for you, I'd lie for you, walk the wire for you, yeah, I'd die for you.

You know it's true, everything I do, oh, I do it for you.

The song ended and Skye looked up into his eyes. She wanted to tell him. But how could she? They broke hold and Skye went to go sit down.

Jean-Luc eyed the door as the last people who weren't any type of Guild member leave, that included the singer. "Candra, you can come now." he shouted.

Bella and Jean-Luc moved to the front door at the stop of the staircase that lead to the floor. A woman came striding in. Oh, Skye knew this lady. Her uncle Marc had told Skye about her. She moved to the back of

the room so that she could hide behind all these people who were obviously here for meeting. Man I am out of place!

"Y' have called us Candra an' we have come." said Bella, her voice going totally icy. It was obvious that she didn't like her.

Candra looked around the hall at all the people as if looking for one person. Skye knew that it was time to make a quick exit. Leaving behind the hiding place, she slowly made her way to the doors at the back. Pulling at the doors, she discovered that they were all locked. Quietly, without looking back at all the people, she went across the room and tried the other door. It too was locked. She was trapped inside a huge Guild meeting. There were windows that she could always break, but that would mean having to fly up two stories to the windows in the hall. Thieves and Assassins stood in the room; they were among the best in the world. That was no comfort to Skye.

Candra became amused as she watched the girl try to flee. Bella and Jean-Luc's gaze was also diverted to Skye when they saw the direction that Candra was looking in.

After Skye gave up, went to go get a drink and sat down in the back, did she address the crowd. "I regret to inform you that there will not be any more elixir." Her message was short, blunt and to the point. It had

the effect that she was wanting. People gasped and started shouting, yelling.

"What's de meaning o' dis Candra?" demanded Jean-Luc. A couple of the Assassins had their guns drawn and pointed at her. The two Guilds were on the verge of war in that very room.

With a loud booming voice she spoke with clarity, "I was never the one who made it. I was the one who collected your tithe and handed it out. It is at this time that I have to say that the person who supplied me

with your elixir's is not longer on this planet."

Everyone was quiet. You could even hear a pin drop had anyone had the inclination to do so.

"Bring Skye Devreaux here." barked Candra. Shock ran through Skye. Like a scared deer, she looked left and right for a way out. Yet, she knew that there was no where to go.

Remy sat in silent shock. No more elixir. It was too hard to comprehend. For since he could remember, the Guilds had existed. And now, Candra wanted Skye. What for?

Marc held out his hand for her to take. Skye was grateful that he didn't just grab her and haul her up there. "T'ank y'." murmured Skye as she took it. He escorted her to the front where she was made to sit in front of them.

Candra walked up to her and spun around the chair to face the crowd. "The Devreauxs have been givin' me de elixir f' hundreds o' years." Skye could only blush and look away.

Whispers erupted over the crowd, some harsh, others confused. Someone shouted, "What stops dem from takin' it too?"

Candra didn't answer. Instead she looked at Skye to give it. " 'Cause it was meant for de Guilds an' only de Guilds."

Bella and Jean-Luc stared at her. This was the secret that their families had been seeking. They didn't know whether to be pissed off, or happy because of the fact that they weren't actually under Candra's thumb anymore.

"Y' sayin' dat she won' make any?" asked Marc softly from behind Bella.

"Dat's what I'm sayin'." affirmed Candra. People started to move inwards, closing off any way of escaping, effectively closing her in. "She came an' told me a month after Marc Devreaux died dat she wasn't goin' t'make anymore f' me to give y'."

Oh my Gawd, I can't believe dis is happenin'. Like an angry mob they closed in. Skye's head began to spin. She needed to get out. And there was only one way out and that one way was up.

When she felt someone grab her hair, she knew she had enough. "Get away from me or else!" she screamed in panic. The people didn't listen. They were closing in on her, making her feel closed in. "Get away or I'll suck de personality out of ya an' send y' into a coma!" The only people that the phrase affected was Remy, Bella and Jean-Luc. Rogue left her caution drop away and struck out.

"Stop!!!" screeched Remy. But it was too late, Skye began to fight back with her mutant powers. A punch sent four men flying backwards into others. Tears in her eyes and streaming down her cheeks, she flew up to

the windows by the ceiling and broke them by driving her fist through them. A shower of glass fell on the people below.

"Stop her!" yelled Candra furiously. This was not going according to her plan. But everyone didn't know what to do. Someone broke down the door at the back and the Assassins left through it leaving the Thieves alone

in the ball room. What a night dis is. Sighed Jean-Luc with Skye's necklace in his hand.

Skye flew back to her mansion with amazing speed. Dropping down to her front door, she quickly opened it, went inside and locked it.

"What's de matter?" asked Mrs. Thompson running towards the foyer when she heard the door slam.

"Dey be comin'. Candra told dem de truth!!" gasped Skye trying to catch a breath.

"Mon Dieu." breathed Mrs. Thompson as she ran out of the room to try to lock all the windows.

"Skye, are you okay?" asked Mr. Thompson who came into the room to see his wife run out.

"Oh... dey know. Candra told dem everythin'!! An' on top o' dat, Remy knows it's me. How could t'ings go so wrong??!" sobbed Skye slowly taking a seat on the floor in shock.

"Merde." whispered Mr. Thompson. "Skye know that we'll help you in anyway we can. But now, it's best that you go into your secret room and stay there." Skye nodded and picked herself off the floor. "Where's Emily?"

"Oh no." gasped Skye in panic. "Dey still have her!!"

There was no fear in his eyes. "They won't hurt children. Don't worry."

"I can understand if y' want to leave." said Skye slowly. "I've brought dis all upon us an' it's up t'me t'fix."

"You know we will never leave you hanging Skye." he whispered.

"Ya I know, 'cause of y' oath t'my uncle." sighed Skye. "Mr. Thompson dat was my uncle, not me. Y' know dat y' might not live through dis."

"You don't think too highly of us, do you Skye." retorted Mr. Thompson.

"I'm sorry," whispered Skye. "I didn't mean t'attack y' integrity. Den come, we got t'ings t'do. Can I call you Pierre, instead of Mr. Thompson? Y' like family t'me."

"By all means Miss." he smiled as they both headed up the stairs.

Any comments??? They would be appreciative!!!!

P.S. The song belongs to Brian Adams....
