Title: My quest to collect every Gambit figure/collectible is nearly complete
Post by: Blade3D1 on October 11, 2020, 06:49:46 AM
A year ago I decided that I was going to obtain every Gambit collectible ever created.      A year later I’m very close.      I figured I’d share my collection and answer any questions about any particular piece.

I also would like to ask everyone on here if there are any super rare items that I might be missing.

I know there are a few statues (mostly the gambit bust) that I still need.      But besides that I believe I have every figure.

I'd love to see your own collections as well.

Cool!
Which figure is your favorite?

Figure wise, I'd have to say the Mezco, which I just got this week.  I'm super impressed with it.  Especially the fact that his pants are actual fabric, which I've never seen before on a figure.

That Mezco is a cool one!

Now I am curious what figure is the smallest?

Nice collection.
There is gold, silver and bronze Gambit coins. I never got the gold one because I could not find it or I would have it. I haven't looked for in some time, it might be out there somewhere.  I have the silver and bronze. Very cool looking. I'll attach a pic of the back of the silver one and face of the bronze one. The image is same for all coins as is the text on the back.

They minted 25,000 of bronze, 5000 silver and I have no clue for the gold one. I have a Storm one too. Never found any others but I stopped going crazy on ebay for my own wallet. LOL

edit:
Whoa, the text didn't come out good.
It says:

"A New Orleans native Remy Lebeau can harness the energy in any object and release it...with explosive results! A former member of the Thieves Guild, Lebeau now treads the straight and narrow as the Xman called Gambit."
Coin date is 1997.

Shock warning incoming.
Not only do I have a bronze Storm, I have a bronze Rogue. They both look good. I got the Rogue one after Marvel ruined her for me. I thought they would redeem her and never did. IMO    :)

Smallest would have to be these two.  One is from the X-Men Pocket Comics and the other is from the Bluebird Gambit head playset that was only released in the UK.  They’re basically Marvel versions of Mighty Max toys.

Also is there any official Lego Gambit or it doesn`t exist?

I don’t think there is. LEGO didn’t have too many X-men sets.

Never seen or heard of those coins, crazy

I found a site, Icollector dot com that has one silver Gambit coin available. Good Luck. :)

edit: Highland Mint made them. There is a set of 5 silver I never seen before but not sure if available.

I'll post an update with some pics tomorrow. Should be receiving several packages in the mail with some rare stuff... INCLUDING the bronze Highland Mint Gambit coin (THANK YOU Nekobaghira for turning me on to that).

I tried finding it on iCollector, but no luck. I have to get the silver one as well.

I know you said there's a gold one but I can't find anything on it. Do you maybe have a link to a picture of one? Just to confirm it exists so I can put it on my list.

Maybe it sold already on ICollector and I only found one coin the day I searched.

As for the Gold one, there were not a lot of them minted - 500 or less (100). I think the image below is the gold one. I would try ebay too.

That image may be the silver one probably lighting confusing me for what the background would look like for the gold, but know they all look the same and have the same verbiage.

Its amount of availability. The gold ones will be very hard to find. Check ebay, ICollector, Mercari on a regular basis or google. I couldn't find one when I was searching years ago.

HighLand Mint doesn't show them anymore either. You are on a hunt my friend. Good Luck and if you find two, let me know. LOL

I think it's so great when people do something creative with their collections, beyond just displaying them. Those recreations of scenes from comics, videogames etc are just amazing.

Thank you. I have so much fun creating these images. Nice to be able to share it with a group of folks who are as likely to appreciate this over anyone else I can think of. Never been a better time to be a Gambit fan, huh?

Thought I'd experiment trying to recreate some other effects. Trying for something like this:

Are you trying to get all the figure variants?
Maybe they are in there but I didn't see them. Here are the ones I didn't notice:
the metal mutants 2" Gambit, light up Gambit in his original paint scheme(there were actually 2 of these: one with magenta torso and the other with a purple torso). The X-Men vs Street fighter 2 packs. I saw you had the repacked version but there was also a "player 2" variant that had a blue coat and packed with Zangief. Famous Covers Gambit (9" scale/cloth outfit. I have one shown in my previous post. Ugly ass figure.)
Toy Biz also did a 12" Gambit in cloth around '98 or so.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Toy-Biz-Marvel-Comics-Special-Edition-Gambit-12-figure/143485632404?hash=item216868ff94:g:nOAAAOSwYpxeCAjF (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Toy-Biz-Marvel-Comics-Special-Edition-Gambit-12-figure/143485632404?hash=item216868ff94:g:nOAAAOSwYpxeCAjF)
There was a 3 pack of Bishop, Gambit, Sinister around 99. All re-releases of the original Toy Biz offerings. This Gambit gets a sturdier material for his coat, a black staff instead of silver, and his sleeves under his coat are blue instead of pink.

There were 2 other blue and yellow uniform Gambits released. One in the larger 10" deluxe scale and the other in the 5" scale released in a multipack with all the other X-Men circa UXM 275 with that team look.

Theres the Marvel Legends Gambit from Toy Biz in that 5 pack with Rogue Wolvy Mags and beast. This Gambit's jacket is pleather instead of fabric. Theres the disk shooter Gambit which is Gambit in his X-Treme X-men outfit. This was in a X-men sub line. I see u do have the repaint of that figure.

Also don't see the Marvel Select variant with the long hair and purple instead of magenta. Thats all I can think of ATM...
Here's what I have on hand

Great collection. I love the pics and recreations. I have to get the target exclusives. Especially Rogue because I missed out on the last Marvel legends of her. Which is a shame because it looks like the best Rogue figure I've ever seen.

It is the best but this new one is mostly the exact same figure with a new hair sculpt and the paint aps are slightly different. Although, best Rogue figure isn't saying much when this is your nearest competition  ;D

I'd swear I've seen that face in a horror movie, I just can't think of which one.

I think Rogue has fared a little better with dolls than true action figures when it comes to attractiveness. Example:

Made in a limited edition of 300 pieces, the X-Men Rogue Tonner Doll is made of fine quality vinyl and hard plastic and stands 16-inches tall. The dressed Tonner doll features a hand-painted face and eyes, a Tyler skin tone, and includes brown rooted saran hair with platinum streaks, a green and yellow stretch jumpsuit, a brown faux leather jacket, yellowy stretch gauntlets, two brown belts with metal trim, yellow faux leather boots with back zippers, and two pairs of yellow and Tyler skin tone hands. Emily head sculpt. Limited edition of 300 pieces. Ages 14 and up.

I have this Rogue and she's hideous.lol Rogue hasn't fared too well in action figure form. But the legends figure looks beautiful. But I'm not buying it for $250. I need a Rogue to go with the Marvel legends Gambit figure or the mezco one. I have to make sure to get the target exclusive. I have the barbie style Rogue but I need one to go with the 6in Gambit figures I have.

Ha!  Of course the Gambit figure from that line wasn't that great either facewise.

Also, thanks for sharing your figure set ups they are cool.

You may be thinking of this video which featured that exact figure lol-

Think the problem with the ML Gambit was the hair.I swapped out the hair with the Marvel Select and it made a world of difference

The default hair is too shallow making it look like he has a caveman's forehead.

Edit: then I swapped that with the hair plus the boots and chest plate from the newer retro Gambit:

And gave him a bunch of extra hands, better cards etc. Had to repaint the belt to match the silverish blue from the boots and chest plate border on the parts I kit-bashed.

killphil - Awesome collection and even more awesome poses/photos!

I have most of the ones you had mentioned (but maybe aren't shown in the pics) except for the X-Men vs Street fighter 2 pack (which I'm ok with just having the repackaged verision, although I do want the 2nd player variant).

The 12" ToyBiz Special Edition one was the last one that I was missing, and I JUST won it on eBay earlier this week. Should have it next week.

I also need the long hair Diamond Select variant.

But, all that aside... WHAT is that blue armed toybiz one?! I have never seen that!

Thanks for the tip on the Gambit and Rogue retro figures too. I had no idea that was coming out.

Here are a few of my latest additions:

I'm so happy to have the Highland Mint coin (even though I still MUST have the silver and gold ones) and also the completed Plant Studios pin collection finally. The board game I'm thrilled about for nostalgia reasons. The heroclix are pretty meh, to me.

I did! Thanks for the tip on that. PLEASE, if you ever see the silver or gold one up for auction anywhere (if you don't snag it yourself), let me know. I'd love to have all three.

No problem, I'll keep looking. I have wanted the gold one for a long time. :)

Edit: And for your same reasons, I've always wanted all three. :) Got 2, so, closer. That Gold one is going to be tough. LOL

killphil - Awesome collection and even more awesome poses/photos!

That blue armed Gambit came in a 3 pack in the late 90's. Came with Sinister and Bishop as well. Think it was a Kay Bee exclusive? Can't quite remember.
Here's that blue and yellow 10" Gambit. Think he was Kay bee exclusive too. Pretty sure I snagged both him and the 3 pack at the same time.

I used to have that board game you just posted too lol. Don't think I have it anymore, though, unfortunately. Had a lot of fun playing it as a kid, though. Think I got that at Kay Bee as well.
They had a sequel to that game. Never got this one, though:

I got the blue and yellow 10" Gambit heading my way in the mail. I also snagged both of those other board games at the same time I got the original one.

Just got the 90's Gambit wallet new in the package yesterday.

Every time I think I have everything, I find something new. I THINK the only two I still need is the long haired Diamond Select variant and the Eagle Moss Lead Figure.

Are there any other collectibles (along the lines of the pins, wallet, and minted coin) that I should be looking for?

I'm just an action figure collector, so I don't have the same knowledge about other collectables that I do with figures. I know there are a couple Funko Pops if that's your thing? Definitely not for me, but I know they are out there.

Hope you already got your Mafex Gambit pre-ordered because most online retailers have sold thru already.

Thats a tough one. I've been thinking about it and I don't know. I bought from Ebay often, never tried the ICollector site and Mercari is interesting but not sure about it.

Does Medicom have their own site?

I pre-ordered Gambit, Magneto, and Psylocke Revoltechs from this site and had no issues. The Gambit I got was missing an eyeball in one of his alternate faces and his flight stand broke. They replaced both of those  accessories but you have to get at them within a week of receiving the order for any defects. So I always thoroughly inspect every item, move every joint and just make sure that there is nothing wrong or that could potentially go wrong when I 1st get them.

Heres a site where it's still available. Never ordered with them, though, but they are US based import company like most of the sites of pre-ordered from.

Wish I would have bought an extra Rogue back in the day to keep MOC too. Maybe I can find one on ebay for a decent price. Would love to display both together.

It's actually interesting that they put these put. But they're so cheap I don't see them being a big deal. If they wanted money they should've released actual figures. I hate Storm with the mohawk by the way.

Kit bashed my new Gambit with my old. I had already swapped the arms out and given him a cloth coat, but now I exchanged the hair, boots and chest plate from the new Gambit, and painted his belt to match the silverish blue of the new boots and chestplate lining. Pretty happy with how he's turned out. Hope you all enjoy.
Made him a second staff gripping hand, plus 2 fists and gave him the Marvel Select accessories. Those were already done before, though...

I saw someone call Funko dolls the acne of collectibles. Then admitted he was still gonna buy them.

Catbit is super cute tho, it’s for International Cat Day, so Gambit getting recognized as a cat lover, hugging on Lucy. I think it said he was at Hot Topic.

All New Xfactor was so underrated.

I did buy the Target Gambit in anticipation of finally going back to the office after 1 1/2 years of wfh. used to be a super conservative place, like pantyhose and pantsuits required, but now we’re allowed be be our “authentic selves” and turns out half my department are Marvel fans. Now Remy Doll will be the only one in tights!

I find the Funko Pop thing a fad. The company does stuff, then lays low until the next thing they can exploit.  IMO

I can tell you that my hubby is glad I don't want to collect that sort of thing and me too. Too much space.

I can't start another toy collection...I'd already conceded to getting rid of all my My Little Pony playsets and now just have my 300-strong herd. But I did buy the Target Gambit dolly for my naked work-from-home desk. Now I have a co-worker! We have little in common, turns out. I am morally opposed to gambling.

I have the 2008 Comiccon pony Neko got me, and she and Gambit both like the same color palette and kicking things.

I remember that 'Little Pony' from that con, it was an exclusive for that convention.

I still have my 'Vanishing Bugs Bunny' from that convention, it was an exclusive as well.

I bought a lot of Gambit art that year. They had an artist row and you walk up and down the aisle and ask for commissions.  Some really inexpensive too.

At the New York Con, I met Georges Jeanty. He's mostly known from drawing Buffy but he worked on the Layman Gambit run. Anyway, I purchased a piece of art from issue 10 (I think, can't remember, its hidden away in my hobby room.)It's not colored its the blueprint for printing. It's cool.

I have the Mezco too. This is easily the best Gambit figure to date. Might be the best figure of all time, quite honestly. Even Gambit haters are saying that. There are still a few on ebay going for less than $200. Here's one for $170 including shipping.

Didn’t he also park it on the White House lawn, after it like, turned into a rocket car? Okay, slightly less conspicuous vehicle parked next to the Oval Office, nothing to see here…

*chuckles* the last few posts makes me think the Maisto Marvel Universe Die-Cast Collection should have made a mini-jet for Gambit. LOL
Put his signature cards and I would like to have him on it like they did with the Rogue car. LOL

I have been spending time in my hobby room. I'm looking for things that I can't find and find things I forgot I had.

Marvel's Die Cast Pose-able Action Heroes.
I only have Gambit and Wolverine or so I think. I never know what I'll find. LOL
They are not very big: 3 inches or so which is 76.2mm. (Hoping I did the conversion right. LOL)

Here is something new to look for. :) Price on the back: $39.95 US
No, I do not know where my hubby's co-worker found it.

I think I might have this. I’ll have to double check. I have a ton of those tiny Gambit figures and they kinda just blend together (but must-haves if I’m going to accomplish my goal).

I’ve added a bunch more to my collection since I first posted. I’m waiting on two more Gambits to arrive in the mail and then I’ll post an updated photo.

They do not look like that when you get them. You have to paint them yourself. I opened the box and thought ... what? LOL

Have you seen that bootleg 1/12th Gambit figures? Cajun Card Dealer is what they're it. Looks like it blows the recent Sideshow version out of the water. If I collected 1/6th, that figure would be a must have.

Also, toy company Mondo is producing a line of 1/6th scale action figures based on the animated series. Wolverine and Magneto were previewed and maybe released a while back, but they just previewed upcoming Gambit and Jubilee last month at SDCC.

Sure wish these were at the 1/12th scale. These are absolute dead on to the XTAS animation models. Makes Hasbro's recent XTAS line look even more horrid than they already were.

I added this to the Gambit Appreciation Thread on ABP the other day and then realized it was likely to get more eyes on it here...

Quote
Statue Gambit - X-Men - MiniCo - Iron Studios

Iron Studios proudly presents its first MiniCo line of Marvel`s most beloved mutant superheroes, the X-Men, one of the most requested series by fans and collectors, in Iron Studios` stylized Toy Art version. The collection is based on the design of comics from the 1990s, one of the most popular and cult phases of the group, with a diorama scenario of the heroes on top of a scrap of a Sentinel Robot, one of their classic enemies, and explores the most striking traits of each character`s personality through their looks.

The "Gambit - X-Men - MiniCo - Iron Studios" statue features the charismatic Cajun mutant leaning on the metallic remains of a Sentinel, his inseparable staff in hand and holding an Ace of Hearts playing card. In a seemingly relaxed mood after a good fight, he flirts with his fellow group member Rogue, with whom he has fallen in love, in a mutual feeling. Recruited by heroine Storm to join the X-Men, Gambit is Remy LeBeau, a very powerful mutant who can manipulate kinetic energy. He is also skilled at throwing cards, wrestling, and using his staff, as well as being an accomplished poker player.

Find out the entire X-Men MiniCo line from Iron Studios. Already available for Pre-Order!

I've seen those sets on BBTS. They look pretty neat. Kind of beyond the range of my focus, which is pretty much super articulated 6" scale figures, but they do look cool.
Also, if anyone missed out on Mafex Gambit last year, he recently got re-released. While he did sell out at every regular vendor, the prices on Ebay have dropped astronomically.

That's cheaper than any of the e-tailers or importers could get them to us! Pretty crazy. 2-3 weeks ago he was going for no less than $300, often times closer to $400, and usually with $30-$60 shipping on top of that.

Here’s some closer shots of the first two shelves. Let me know if you have any questions about particular items or want to know more about the collection. (You guys are the only people I can geek out about my collection with. Everyone else thinks I’m nuts, lol)

Awesome. You GOTTA get some Govee lights on amazon (the same lighting strips I used in my cabinet) and backlight the collection. It'll instantly transform your figure display.

Wanted to share a few of my rarer oddities from the collection.

Oddity 1: Bluebird's X-Men Chemical Chaos Playset

I think this is one of my favorites, simply because I feel like I willed it into existence. In the 90s I remember I had just gotten the X-Men Pocket Comics "War Room" playset that came with Gambit and Mr. Sinister (Pocket Comics were basically those mini Mighty Max playsets but with Marvel characters). And while playing with it I remember thinking, "Damn, it'd be so cool if there was one of these in the shape of Gambit's head".

Fast forward 20 some odd years, and when I started my Gambit collection, I found out IT ACTUALLTY EXISTS! It was only released in the UK (I'm from the US). What's crazy to me is that what I figured was just a random childhood thought, turned out to be a real thing.

As a rational person, I wonder if I had seen an ad in a comic for this which had implanted that thought. Does anyone know if any of the 90s X-Men comics had an ad for this specific toy?

Oddity 2: Gambit Quarter Machine Sticker Misprint

I remember eating at some family restaurant as a kid and as we were leaving I saw a few quarter vending machines. One had  X-men stickers (and I was REALLY excited because one of them was a Gambit sticker). So naturally I bugged my dad for some quarters, but he wasn't having it.

In recent years, while building my collection, I finally got the exact sticker that I had seen in that restaurant as a kid. But while searching for that, I also stumbled across the fact that there had been ANOTHER Gambit sticker released for super limited time. This sticker had been recalled because of a spelling error.

So of course... as soon as I found it listed on ebay, I had to have the fabled "Gambet" quarter machine sticker.

For you Funko Pop fans, saw in the latest Previews catalog that the fourth of the 4 Jim Lee X-Men #1 covers will be Gambit. Connect the 4, and you will have (from left to right), a Beast funko in front of the Beast/Jean/Prof. X cover, a Gambit funko in front of the Gambit/Psylocke/Rogue cover, a Wolverine funko in front of the Wolverine/Cyclops/Iceman cover, and a Magneto funko in front of the Magneto cover. Based on that news, I may have to grab the other three now.
